Shipton/Tilman Grants

Shipton/Tilman Grants

Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman are arguably the greatest adventurers of this past century. Their exploits catalog daring and inspirational achievements that have inspired many outdoor enthusiasts to push themselves to their limits and follow their dreams.

Shipton and Tilman were avid enthusiasts who believed in traveling in small, compact teams, unburdened by porters and excessive bulk. They seemingly got a thrill out of getting by on the bare minimum required to achieve their goal. Selecting a team was equally as important as how they traveled. They chose close friends who had mutual respect and trust for one another.

W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. follows a similar philosophy. Small teams of associates have the freedom to explore new technologies and to create innovative products.
The annual Shipton/Tilman Grant was established as a tribute to the spirit of adventure embodied by the endeavors of these two men. The Grant provides $30,000 each year to be divided among three to six expeditions that are most in harmony with Shipton and Tilman’s philosophies.
Applications are accepted from small, unencumbered teams of friends with daring and imaginative goals. The expedition team must plan to accomplish their feat in a self-propelled, environmentally sound and cost-effective way. Since both Eric Shipton and H. W. Tilman were prolific authors, we encourage all applicants to read their books to gain a better understanding of their philosophies.
